Who’s to blame in Rutgers suicide, phobe prince etc.?
Question by Wicked32: Who’s to blame in Rutgers suicide, phobe prince etc.?
First and foremost, let me state that I do believe these 2 along with every other suicide is a senseless tragedy. My only qualm is, who is to blame for such otriocities?
Everyday numerous people commit suicide for various reasons, from financial issues to romantic problems and for the mass majority of these incidents, 99% of the country, or even the world, doesn’t bat an eye. The only people who actually care are the people close to the ones who commit suicide.
In both these high profile suicide cases, the media, and everyone who blindly follows them, is very quick to blame everyone from society to bullies. In everyone of theses cases it’s always seems to be someone else’s fault. What ever happen to personal responsibility for one’s actions? I just don’t buy this whole, let’s blame everyone else game, in order to label those who commit suicide as saints which most of the time is to further ones own agenda.
Let’s look at the tragic case of Phobe Prince. A 15 year old girl, who hangs herself as a supposed result of the bullying of various teens girls who are now charged with various crimes as a result. Phobe was a girl who moved to massachusetts from Ireland. In Ireland, she was bullied. In Massachusetts she was bullied. Am I the only one who sees the connection here that this girl was so sensitive that anyone who didn’t walk on eggshells around her was bound to upset her? What was to happen if she didn’t commit suicide when she did? Do you really believe that do to her own failure to stand up for herself, she’d be able to live a productive life in a competitive world in which we all live in? Granted children are cruel, but countless people are bullied and teased and are able to say enough is enough and stand up to their harrassers. Even a cornered mouse will defend it’s self before it will just willingly die. So is it the fault of the harrassers that she wasn’t able to stand to this challenge or her own fault for rolling over and accepting death as her only means?
Now for the recent Rutger’s suicide. A young man who’s homosexual escapade was streamed to various friends of his roommate without his consent with this being the catalyst of why he jumped from a bridge. Understandably, what the roommate did was mean, immoral, and to a degree unlawful but was it really fueled by hate for the fact that he was gay. I can’t accept that regardless of what the definition of a hate crime is because laws don’t always make sense nor does their application or interpretation. Take possession of drugs. When you are arrested with marijuana you are charged for both the marijuana and the bag it is in as paraphennallia. So unless you’re storing weed in your hand you always face at least 2 charges, But I’m off track here. Everyone is trying to present this case of suicide as the direct cause ofthe video taping. That the roommate directly caused his suicide because of the webcam streaming. Where does Tyler’s personal responisbility come into play here. Was he not presented with various routes to take to remedy this situation? Where was his gay pride? Why was he so ashamed of his choices and lifestyle that he would choose the path of no return in order to remedy the situation? Regardless of society’s view of his lifestyle what ever happen to being proud And accepting of one’s self regardless of the opinion of others?
I just don’t understand how everyone can can completely write off personal responsibility and blame everyone else for the actions of another. It’s no different from a thief blaming a business owner for not giving him/her a job.
Maybe my inability to justify this is blame game, is because my parents tuaght me always to be proud of who I am and be responisble for my own actions and accept the consequences of those actions wihout the expectation of someone else being at fault. Many people will try to use “depression” as the excuse for the individuals reason behind the poor choices they made but I believe that in itself is a failed argument.
Basically I’m looking for opinions and reasoning of how or why it is okay to blame everyone else and void personal responsibility regardless if it is for or against the blame game. I don’t mean to offend anyone and I truly believe both of these incidents, along with countless others, are extremely tragic but only caused by the hands of those who choose these actions.
That’s where my problem lies. Nobody, regardless of what they do, can make you kill yourself. Self preservation of ones own life is the most basic instinct in virtually every creature on this planet. Suicide is a premeditated conscious decision one makes.
As for having no right to harrass her in death. You do have this right. It’s under the same right in which you use in stating they had no right. The freedom of speech gives them the right to voice their opinion of something whether you agree with them or not even in death. People have been speaking ill about the dead for generations. By accepting the arguement that words or opinion should be censored in any form, is to give up the right of freedom of speech removing your own right to state those children had no right. Don’t get me wrong, what they did was in bad taste and any half decnt parent would of taught them respect enough to not say such things but they do have the right to voice their opinion.

You can’t expect others not to blame those who harrassed the deceased. They had NO right to do that.In these two examples, all I could think of is why aren’t people more tolerable of others? This is 2010 people.
Hell, I’m all for accepting personal responsibility but when bullying of some degree is involved, it’s another story as far as I’m concerned
