The method is plea-bargaining
From my understanding a plea-bargaining is the process whereby a criminal defendant and prosecutor reach mutually satisfactory disposition of a criminal case, subject to court approval.

For the prosecutor, it saves time and money by avoiding trial.

For the defendant, it often results in a lesser sentence.
